What has happened to the 346 Beagles imported in 2023 but not used for testing?
Via Freedom of Information (FOI) requests to Danish and Belgian authorities, we found out about all the dogs imported from Marshall breeding factory in NY, USA, to UK laboratories.
This importation data was then corroborated by further FOI requests to British authorities.
A total of 502 beagles were imported. Charles River bought 74% of the dogs, LabCorp 6%, and 20% to an unknown location. There is a gap of information because the FOI about the dogs imported via Brussels came heavily redacted.
According to the Home Office’s statistics for 2023, out of the 502 beagles imported from the USA, only 156 were used for experiments at UK licenced establishments. Therefore, there are 346 imported beagles missing from Home Office’s statistics.
We were concerned about this large discrepancy between the total number of imported beagles and those actually used in tests. So, we decided to ask the Home Office directly.
Their reply clarified that statistics figures only account for “animals used for an experimental purpose, or for the creation of genetically altered animals. Animals used for other purposes such as those used for the breeding of normal animals would not be captured in these figures.”
The only suggestion the Home Office is giving for the 346 imported beagles not accounted in their stats is that they are being used for breeding at a licenced establishment in the UK
At least 368 imported beagles went to Charles River, and it’s possible that the shipment of 102 beagles also went to this lab, although there’s not been confirmation.
These are all the clues we have been able to unearth about the beagles imported in 2023 from the USA. We can’t certify what exactly has happened to these dogs, so please review all the clues and let us know in your comment what’s your theory is on what’s happened to these beagles. Please ask your MP for information on these unaccounted beagles.
Just of note, since the last shipment on 9th September 2023, there has not been a single dog imported into the UK for animal testing.
