In 2022 there was on average just 5.75 full time equivalent inspectors directly involved in compliance audits for the 4.5 million animals in laboratories. This was confirmed by freedom of information request.
FOI Question: For audits in 2022 how many included all or at least a significant amount of animals being inspected.
Reply: An on-site audit will include inspection of a proportion of animals held on site. Exact figures are not recorded therefore the information requested is not held.
At the end of 2022 there were in total just 15 inspectorate staff.
The graph below from the ASRU Annual Report for 2022 shows 25, this is admitted to be wrong and will be updated.
The inspectorate are split into teams, most are for licencing or administration.
ASRU are not fit for purpose, they can’t even add up let alone protect laboratory animals.
