The statistics on scientific procedures performed on living animals for 2024.
A total of 2,637,578 tests were performed on 2,554,446 living animals, showing a mere 1% reduction in procedures and a 2% reduction in animals used compared to 2023 figures. The government continues to fail in its pre-electoral promise to phase out animal testing.
We have extracted data relating to the number of beagles used and the procedures performed on them.
Figures on the use of beagles show significant decreases compared to last year’s, particularly regarding their importation.
Since our international exposé in August 2023 on the import of thousands of beagles from the USA to Europe, and the disruption of their importation route using SAS passenger planes, no more beagles have been imported into the UK from the USA.
Please sign the petition asking SAS to formally commit to stopping the shipment of laboratory animals:

Although the number of beagles bred in the UK at MBR has significantly decreased by 29% compared to last year, the pressure on the government must continue to grow. Far too many dogs are still suffering every single day inside MBR. They are bred in inhumane conditions for cruel and futile toxicology tests.
We have included the total number of procedures performed on beagles, but note that all of the beagles from MBR are used for regulatory procedures, i.e. toxicology and safety tests required by regulators. The total number of this type of test has also decreased by 30% since last year. However, all regulatory testing should be ended immediately, given that there are already available modern, human-based tests which provide far more accurate and relevant data.
