MBR France
In France, Marshall BioResources (MBR) owns three breeding facilities supplying dogs to laboratories: one in Gannat (Allier), another in Mézilles (Yonne) and one more in Lyon (not much is known about this site).
Gannat
The Gannat farm resumed operations in 2017 and it breeds hundreds of beagles and golden retrievers. The dogs are housed in concrete pens but unlike in the UK ans the USA their pens have access to outdoor space. Thousands of dogs are estimated to leave Gannat each year for laboratories across Europe.
This site has been the centre of many protests and in May 2024 two beagles were liberated by activists who broke in during the middle of the night. One Voice filed a legal challenge against MBR in 2019 aand prevented the expansion of the breeding complex.
Mézilles (CEDS)
In 2021, MBR took over the Centre d’Élevage du Domaine des Souches (CEDS) in Mézilles, the largest dog-breeding farm for laboratories in France. Over 1,500 dogs are confined on site, including beagles and golden retrievers. Evidence gathered by One Voice reveals the grim conditions inside: breeding females confined for life, puppies separated early from their mothers and dogs living in cramped, noisy enclosures. Official inspection documents reveal poor record-keeping, unsecured medicines and inconsistencies in the number of animals declared on site. One file described a 3 year old femal forced to give birth to seven puppies by caesarean section and sterlised the same day.
The Mézilles facility combines breeding with laboratory services, allowing experiments and breeding to occur on site.
