Non-Compliance of Animal Testing in Laboratories
The Animals in Science Regulation Unit recently published its annual report, detailing cases of non-compliance.
Tomorrow, there will be a debate in Parliament to raise concerns about the serious animal welfare breaches that have taken place inside UK laboratories.
Michael Wheeler is the MP who has scheduled this debate and he will highlight the failings published in the 2024 ASRU report, and a government minister will then respond to the concerns.
There were 146 cases of non-compliance in UK laboratories, involving 22,204 animals, including dogs, cats, monkeys, mice and other animals. In the majority of cases, the only “remedial action” was that inspectors provided advice.
ASRU is failing animals in UK laboratories and is not fit for purpose. We have received further information on non-compliance cases involving dogs and cats that we requested via FOI, and we will be publishing it soon. However, the government insists that its failure to adequately respond to non-compliance cases does not constitute failure.
You can watch the debate live on Parliament TV tomorrow, Wednesday, at 11am.
